4-DAY MOUNT MERU WILDLIFE AND SUMMIT TREK

Mount Meru offers a unique opportunity to combine hiking with wildlife spotting. On the first day, the route leads through open grasslands where there is a good chance of seeing buffalo, warthogs, baboons, colobus monkeys and a variety of bird species.

The hike on the second day is short but intense as the trail is steep through open and bushy terrain. On the third day we climb the 4566 metre high peak and then hike to Miriakamba. On the fourth day we return to Momela Gate. On the way, we again have the opportunity to observe small mammals such as monkeys and antelopes.

DAY 1:
MOMELA GATE (1500M) – MIRIAKAMBA (2514M)
Today after driving one hour from Moshi town to Momela gate and meeting with the ranger to accompany the group then start walking passing in some open grassland with a great chance to see buffalo and warthog.

The trail guides us through sparser forest areas abundant with birds and monkeys, including black and white colobus. Expect around 5 to 6 hours of walking. Tonight, accommodation will be at Miriakamba Hut.
DAY 2:
MIRIAKAMBA HUT (2514M) – SADDLE HUT (3570M)
Today’s walk is brief yet involves a notably steep and continuous ascent throughout. Beginning with a scenic route through the captivating open and verdant montane forest, passing through Elephant Ridge, and transitioning into vast heather and moorland vegetation until reaching Saddle Hut.

Arrive around 2 pm. Acclimate to Little Meru. Return for dinner. Sleep for about 5 hours.
DAY 3:
SADDLE HUT – SOCIALIST PEAK (4566M) – MIRIAKAMBA HUT (2514M)
Rise at 1 am to commence the summit. Witness the sunrise between Cobra and Socialist Peak. Summit around 7 am.

Return to Saddle Hut for a meal and packing. Depending on timing, possible 1 hour of sleep. Now we make our way to Miriakamba Hut overnight.
DAY 4:
MIRIAKAMBA HUT (2514M) – MOMELA GATE (1500M)
Start at Miriakamba through the forest route where there is a waterfall for a short visit. Walk through the open plain where you can see the buffalo and possibly giraffes.

Proceed to Momela Gate to sign out and drive back to the hotel in Arusha.
