We drive towards the wall of the Great Rift Valley, at the foot of which stands the mighty Oldonyo Lengai volcano. Oldonyo Lengai is an active volcano that last erupted in the 1970s. It is revered by the Maasai as the seat of their god “Ngai”.

Its almost perfect cone rises above an area of astonishingly barren beauty. At the foot of the mountain is a stony desert. Here lie the cones of a small extinct volcano and Lake Natron, a huge soda lake that stretches all the way to the Kenyan border. Flamingos come here to breed and in the late afternoon the colourful flamingo colonies are a spectacular sight.
